Error 1068 when starting Server for NFS

Hello. I have just installed Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 on my Windows
2000 Professional (SP4) computer.

I installed the NFS Server and NFS Authentification only (which I have done
on other computers without any problems). However things have not gone
smoothly on this occasion.

The service does not start, and if I try to start it manually, I get the error

Could not start the Server for NFS service on Local Computer
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start

What's missing?

Thanks

Richard

Found the problem. It is described in 'Third-Party Port Mapper Services
Cause Services for UNIX Not to Work or to Be Installed Correctly' at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313621

Although I had neither Legato nor NobleNet installed, I had another program
(Frontier Technologies Super TCP suite) that had left footprints behind.

The steps I followed were
1) Install Support Tools from Windows 2000 CD Support\Tools folder
2) Run cmd window and navigate to directory where tools installed
3) Identify Port Mapper service (in this case PMAP32.exe)
4) Find offending service and disable
5) Reboot PC
6) Install Server for NFS and Authentication Tools for NFS
Everything now working properly.

Oops! Should have added step 2b) type tlist -s at command prompt

Offending service was Port Mapper. Tried stopping it, but could not, so set
startup mode to Disabled and rebooted.

Thanks for the report back. Yes, there are other things that can mess up
portmapper, and apparently you just found one of them. I'll add it to my
list...
